Nest #1 status and archive, 2011-12

Male band #1050. He is 10 years old and raised his first successful nest when he was 5. Since then he has raised 2 nests of chicks at Cape Royds. When we arrived at the colony he had built his nest and was waiting for a female to show up. She arrived on Nov 12. Their nest is on the flats in a group of about 15 other pairs and close to a large rock.

We have decided to name this pair after the characters in the Mr. Popper's Penguins movie based on the classic story. Our female will be Loudy and are male will be Stinky.

Nov 20, Both Loudy and Stinky are near the nest, one egg. Nov 21, Loudy has laid the second egg and Stinky is on the nest keeping them warm. Nov 22, Loudy and Stinky are near the nest. Loudy is living up to her name. There are two eggs. Nov 23, Stinky is on the nest, there are two.
Nov 24, Storm in the colony, no picture. We are tent-bound. Nov 25, Stinky is on the nest, there are two eggs. Nov 26, Stinky is on the nest, there are two eggs. Nov 27, Stinky is on the nest, there are two eggs.

The second one is still very small and in the brood patch. Dec 29, Stinky is on the nest and Loudy is close by. There is only one chick left, the other was not growing and has died. It is sad.
