Nest # 2 status and archive, 2013-14

Male band #4235. This male is now 7 years old, was in our study last year and raised two chicks. He has built his nest in the same place and has a new mate. They are in a breeding group called the Home Ranch on flat ground without any protective rocks around them, but there are about 20 nesting pairs so they may be able to fend off the Skuas. His name is JJ and his new mate is Oreo, named by Sarah Hojnicki. When we arrived Nov 30, there were already 2 eggs. Oreo has returned and also wears a band. She was banded as a chick in 09/10 so is 4 years old, this is her firstnest.

Dec 28, Oreo,1 chick.We do not see the egg, but hope it is still there. It needs to hatch soon. Dec 29, Oreo and JJ are on the nest 1 chick, this egg needs to hatch soon. Dec 30,JJ is on the nest 1 chick. Still no visual on the second egg. Dec 31,JJ is on the nest 1 chick. The egg is still there, but has not hatched.

Jan 1, Oreo, 1 chick. The egg is still there but we doubt it will hatch. Jan 2, JJ, 1 chick. Jan 3, JJ, 1 chick. Jan 3, Oreo, 1 chick. The egg rolled out of this nest and was lost to the Skuas in less than 5 min.
