Nest #7 status and archive, 2012-13

 

This is a rare find. Two banded birds that have mated. They were a pair last year, but failed to raise a chick. The female #3943 is 8 years old and did raise chicks two years ago with another male. The Male #4856 is 5 years old and if they raise chicks this year, it will be his first. They are in a colony in a small valley on a slope. Their nest is near the center, a good location for protection against the Skuas. This pair has been named by children in Europe that are following our project. The Vonsild School in Denmark has named the female Mary and the chick Pingo. A class in Spain has named the male Pocholo.

Dec 6. Pocholo has been on the nest for 3 weeks without food or water and Mary did not return. He has left the nest to feed. The Skuas took the egg, the other penguins took the rocks for their nests. Mary has now returned, but to a different nest. We will continue to follow her and her new mate.

Second egg: We do not know when Mary laid her second egg. It is in a different nest.

He has been on the nest for 3 weeks without food or water and needed to go feed.	Dec 7, Mary has been spotted on another nest. She must have moved over to another mate to lay her second egg and then dissappeared. She has returned to this nest. There is one egg. We will continue to follow her.
