Nest #8 status and archive, 2016-17

This female failed to raise a family last season. This year she is in a different breeding group with a different mate. She is 16 years old and was first seen in the colony in 2005. She has had a few successful nests in the last 10 years, but not every year. They have a good nest in the South Rockway breeding group and we wish them luck in raising a family there. Nov 13, Female #2774 has switched nests. This is a common event in the breeding colony. Mates return late to a previous nest and take back the nest and mate from an intruder. This is what has happend here. Nov 19, the female has left the colony, Nov 22, the male has abandoned the nest, the rocks are gone. We will switch to a new pair.

Nov 23. This male is 9 years old. He was first seen in the colony when he was a 4 year old, but has only raised one family since then. He and his mate have a good nest in the Seaview breeding group close to Nest # 4. The egg was first sighted on Nov 22, there is only one, and the female has already left for the ocean and a good feed. The pair has been named Oreo and Domino by the second graders at Clemens Crossing ES, Howard Co MD.

Dec 25, the chick is gone. This season has been hard on the penguins at Cape Royds. We have lost so many nests, The open ocean is too far out for returning mates to bring enough food for the chicks.
