The Cape Royds penguin colony is the farthest south of all, and is the
first to be investigated, beginning with the Shackleton Expedition in
1909. The penguins arrive in late October and fledge their chicks in the
first week of February; large numbers then return to molt, until early
March.

The Cape Royds hut was erected in February 1908 by members
of the Nimrod Expedition, under the leadership of Ernest Shackleton;
it was refurbished by The Antarctic Heritage Trust in 2004-06.
