Nest #5, 2018-19
Banded Bird #4877, Female
This pair was here in the colony last year and raised a chick. Their nest is close by to where it was last year, and in a protected area we call the Rocks. The female is 11 years old so a seasoned parent. We do not know how old her partner is. They have been named Frost and Freeze by the students in Sandry Sullivan's 6th grade Science class at Old Hammondtown ES in Mattapoisett MA
Dec 22, 2018. The nest has failed. Today the egg is gone. Although Freeze is still near the nest, she will leave soon. It is a sad day.
First egg: Nov 11, 2018, Second egg: Nov 14, 2018
Dec 9, 2018 We noticed there was only one egg left in the nest. We do not know what happened to the 2nd egg.
Jan 15, 2019. Although this nest started with two eggs, neither had a chance to hatch. Perhaps they rolled away or the Skuas took them, we will not know. The banded bird stayed near the nest for 2 weeks but then finally left. We never saw her mate again. She is wearing one of our Geo-location tags so we sure hopes she comes back next year. Check with us in Nov 2019.
